Formal & Informal Groups

Formal teams are based on defined role human relationships – in formal derive from based on personal relationships and agreement Formal Groups are created to achieve certain organisational targets and are focused on the co-ordination of work actions – informal groups serve to satisfy the emotional and social needs of group users not related necessarily to the tasks to get undertaken Formal group users have identified roles plus the nature of tasks to get undertaken can be described as predominant characteristic of the group – informal organizations are based on personal relationships and membership can trim across the formal structure in the organisation Formal groups are likely to be relatively permanent, however may be a change in the account of the group limitations of group decisions:

Groups make smarter decisions compared to the average group member, but not as good as the best person working alone; Organizations involve everyone –advantageous in some circumstances (changing attitudes) the process is usually slow than for people

Group working usually creates more workable solutions

Social loafing – the tendency for folks to expend less work when functioning as a member of your group than as an individual. Groups involve everyone –advantageous in a few circumstances (changing attitudes)
